St PATRICK'S DAY - PARTY
all the foreigners were told to wear green, and they largely complied. fun night i was allowed to put on some music, so i played christie, pogues, wolfe tones, westlife, b*witched, Mark McCabe, you know, all the classics.
Here's the four Irish before we went out.
Leah (french)
Antoinette and Randy (USA)
Miriam and Dimmi (greek)
Me and Dimmi
Nico, Carmike, Lucille, (french)Virgine,(belge) and Darragh. carmike's orange do-rag is amazing, the best effort of any of the foreigners.
Nico, Carmike, Yukio, Barbara, and Jake. Apologies if this isn't Barbara, i constantly get the two Austrian girls' names confused.

TRAM DERAILMENT!
And things kept getting better. when we got home there was a tram after derailing right outside the rijkwijksweg balcony. didn't actually see the crash, but was a great time watching them trying to fix it.
Nico with the tram.
to get it off the road they had to jack it up.
took them about an hour to move it.
Aftermath... note the scratches on the road and the broken pavement where it hit.

St PATRICK'S DAY - DECORATING
i think i've sort of explained the pub before, its a small dingey bar, only for exchange students, and run by the university. for St Patrick's they let us paint the walls. we're not sure if they meant to this extent but we didn't need to be asked twice.
We made stencils and bought a cans of green and orange spraypaint and then wrecked the place.
This was a shitload of fun.

BRIAN IS IN THE KITCHEN
i get this a lot off the french. in france the first english you learn is
Where is brian?... Brian is in the kitchen!
the french go nuts for it. i'm basically a god to them. especially if i'm within ten feet of a kitchen.
here's a french comedian doing his brian is in the kitchen bit. sorry its in foreign, but stick with it there's some english.

MILLER VISIT
Brendan Miller came over to visit, which was nice. somebody misses us.
Me and Miriam went to Eindhoven to pick him up. the train to eindhoven has really cool carriages, with individual rooms just like in the movies.
Chief innovation of miller's visit was this. Miriam has the full series of black books on her computer, but the subtitles can't be switched off. they are very annoying, sometimes they go out of sync. they're generally distracting.

NICO AND LUCILLE
Nico and Lucille are two french people who annoy me constantly. they want me to make them famous by putting them in my blog. I will oblige.
Here's the two of thm at the bar in the pub. note the clean unpainted walls. also bonus Miller action in the background!
Here's Nico and Antoinette, dressed up for a Masque we went to a couple of weeks back.
Here's Lucille, she had a cool cigarette holder thing like bet gilroy from coronation street, and it worked too.
HAPPY!?

HOLIDAY - PARIS DAY TWO
day two in paris we did the whole tourist shebang, the lourve, arc de triomphe, champs elysees, notre dame cathedral, eiffel tower.
the venus de milo:
the mona lisa:
you're not allowed to take pictures of it but yukio took that sneaky one.
notre dame:
eiffel tower:
camera was awful in the nightclub this is about the only legible one:
clemence brought us to a nightclub on the champs elysees, called "the queen". naturally at this point we asked whether the club was of a "flamboyant" nature. she said that normally it was a gay club, but on thursdays it wasn't. she was right it was only half gay. french girls made up for this. here's how she sold it to us: free in, and free drink before half 12. sold. then there's what actually happened. the bars were understaffed, and the portions were tiny. half twelve rolls around and we've had maybe two normal drinks. then we notice the pricelist for drink, all of which are €10 or more. crafty. ended up putting four drinks on my credit card, but still €40 for a night out in paris ain't too shabby. and anyway its on the credit card which is basically free money.

HOLIDAY - PARIS DAY ONE
we arrived in paris wednesday evening, and clemence put us up in her house. we just stayed in that night and watched tv.
all over french mtv is this song,
its called marly gomont and by a guy called kamini. he grew up as the only black kid growing up in a small village of 400 people. his dad was the village doctor. the lyrics are basically about how unlike all the other rappers in france, he's not from paris, he's from marly gomont.
here's clemence's house:
and dog:
the dog's name is "one". in france the dog owners accociation have this system where every year all dogs will be named beginning with a particular letter. 1998, when he was born, the letter was "o". he's a Chihuahua, which of course led to much singing of:
and much confusion on jake's part.

HOLIDAY - THE TRAINS
few details on the trains. €15 to brussels. €15 return from there to bruge. €38 to paris on the TGV high speed train.
wikipedia on the TGV:
"The French TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) is the fastest conventional train in the world, using powered metal wheels riding on metal rails. In February 2007 it was reported that the TGV had broken its own 1990 record with a new speed of 553 km/h (343.7 mph) under test conditions with a shortened train (two power cars and three passenger cars).[1][2]"
it was pretty fast yeah. paris is 170 miles from brussels and it took 1 hour 15 mins. when we arrived at paris nord train station we were searched for drugs by the police, probably because we still had amsterdam tags on our bags. we didn't have any of course. here's a picture of the police.
HOLIDAY - BRUGE
Bruge was probably the highlight of the trip, and its a place i can recommend to everyone. the town centre is incredibly beautiful, and its huge. again, here is a picture of a nice square.
the lads in the hostel.
the best part about bruge was the beertasting place we went to. basically they sit you down in a nice restaurant-type setting, and hand you a thick leatherbound menu. in the menu are about 50 pages of beers, ranging from 7-12% in strength. every round we all got three different beers and passed them around. they were all delicious. classical music playing in the background.
